Karua, Lukwago Lead Besigye Legal Team in Luzira Evidence Review
The defense team says reviewing audio and video evidence disclosed by prosecutors is critical to ensuring a fair trial for Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale.

A high-profile team of defense lawyers led by Kenyan human rights advocate Martha Karua and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago on Tuesday visited Luzira Maximum Security Prison to meet opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale, as preparations intensify in their ongoing treason case.

The legal team arrived at the prison carrying electronic devices, including laptops and projectors, to facilitate a comprehensive review of audio and video evidence disclosed by the prosecution.

The lawyers also delivered food supplies for the accused during the lengthy review session.

The visit forms part of the defense's efforts to scrutinize evidence that prosecutors intend to rely on during trial proceedings.

Lawyers say the exercise is essential in helping the accused understand the case against them and prepare an effective defense.

Speaking outside Luzira Prison, Lukwago stressed that access to prosecution evidence is a constitutional right and a fundamental component of a fair hearing.

“Our mission is to ensure that Dr Besigye and Hajj Lutale are afforded every opportunity to examine and analyse the evidence that has been presented by the prosecution. A fair hearing requires that the accused fully understand the material being used against them,” Lukwago said.

Karua said the defense team remains committed to ensuring that the rights of the accused are protected throughout the judicial process.

“The defense must have sufficient time and the necessary facilities to review all audio and video evidence disclosed by the prosecution. This process is vital in guaranteeing a fair trial and safeguarding the principles of justice,” she said.

Dr Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and one of Uganda's most prominent opposition figures, has remained at the centre of national and international attention since the treason charges were brought against him.

Human rights organisations, political activists and legal observers have closely followed developments in the case, citing its significance to Uganda's democratic and judicial landscape.

The review session at Luzira Prison is expected to help the defense team identify key aspects of the prosecution's evidence, assess its authenticity and prepare responses ahead of future court appearances.

Legal experts note that disclosure and examination of evidence is a critical stage in criminal proceedings, particularly in cases involving serious charges such as treason.

The process allows defense lawyers to test the strength of the prosecution's case, challenge evidence where necessary and ensure that accused persons are adequately represented before court.

Public interest in the case remains high, with supporters of Besigye and Lutale calling for a transparent judicial process, while state prosecutors maintain they possess sufficient evidence to support the charges.

The next court sessions are expected to focus on procedural matters and continued examination of evidence as both the prosecution and defense prepare for the substantive hearing of the case.
